Darwin a Moel Tryfan - Diluvialists v Glacialists

28th March 2012
Ym Mehefin 1842, cymaint oedd pwysigrwydd darganfyddiadau dearegol ar Moel Tryfan, sydd uwchlaw Rhosgadfan yn Eryri, a'r chwarel lechi a roddodd deitl i gyfrol gyntaf Kate Roberts, sef chwarel Cors y Bryniau, fel y daeth Charles Darwin ei hun yno i astudio'r creigiau ar y copa.

Ffurfiwyd y Foel wrth i ddau rewlif frwydro yn erbyn ei gilydd, un yn cario gwaddol o wely'r môr, megis cregyn, a'r llall wedyn yn gosod clai a cherrig o'r mynyddoedd ar ei ben, a'i selio. Fe ddaeth y Foel yn rhan o'r frwydyr rhwng y rhai oedd yn coelio mai gwaddol y Dilyw Beiblaidd oedd wedi gosod y cregyn ar ben y mynydd, tra bod eraill yn credu mai rhewlifoedd Oes yr Iâ oedd wedi ffurfio'r Foel 20-30 mil o flynyddoedd yn ôl.

Lle arw a diarffordd yw'r Foel, ond mae'n hynod bwysig i hanes Cymru, a hanes daearegol y byd. Mae hefyd yn hynod o brydferth wrth i'r haul fachludo i'r gorllewin, a goleuo'r creigiau sy'n ymwthio o'r pridd gyda'i olau cochlyd.

Moel Tryfan, above Rhosgadfan in Snowdonia, has an important place in the history of Wales and the history of geological studies. The Foel was formed by two conflicting ice sheets, some 20-30 thousand years ago. The first dredged up materials including shells from the ocean floor, depositing them at the Foel, then the Welsh Ice Sheet pushed clay and rock from the mountains, dumping it on and sealing the top.

The Foel became a battle ground between those who believed that the sea shells on top of the mountain were carried there by the Biblical Flood, and those who were forming the theory of Glaciology. Indeed, such was the significance of Moel Tryfan, that Charles Darwin himself visited and studied the site in 1842.

Moel Tryfan is a rugged, somewhat inhospitable place, surrounded by abandoned slate quarries, one of which, Cors y Bryniau Quarry, gave its name to the first published volume by the Welsh Author, Kate Roberts. It is however a place of great beauty, especially as the setting sun casts its glow on the rocks, jutting from the summit.
