June 16

01st July 2016

It's the 1st of July, and the day to remember the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Here's my late Uncle Edward, in France, with two of his comrades in arms - including a soldier from the Commonwealth (I believe he's from India). This picture makes me weep, not just for the massive unnecessary loss of life in a war that spread from something containable to a worldwide disaster - as countries blindly enacted their suicidal pacts - but also because of what's happening now in Britain, and our own march towards racism, rift and economic suicide.

To mundane matters...
June was a total wreck of a month as far as work goes - all because of a frightful toothache / abscess, the overpowering pain of which denied me the capacity to think or concentrate on anything. I bid farewell to the tooth on the last day of the month.

I did manage some work, and a flying visit to the football in Bordeaux, the excitement of which anaesthetised the pain somewhat, at least for a day!

A rainbow which appeared behind our house the day after the shocking assassination of Jo Cox.

To close - yes, despite the shocking referendum vote and it's ghastly aftermath, the world does still revolve around the sun, not the head of Michael Gove or Boris.
