Things have been rather quiet since my last monthly update, Straight after my October post, a massive storm hit Aberystwyth, and I spent two very long days photographing it, distributing files, washing clothes and scrubbing salt from car windows.

Dechreuodd y mis ffotograffig efo storm fawr iawn. Fues i am oriau meithion yn tynnu lluniau, eu llwytho a'u hanfon at y wasg. Ymddangosodd lluniau mewn sawl papur newyddion Prydeinig, a chwarae teg i gylchgrawn Golwg am gynnwys colofn am fy mhrofiadau.

Several pictures found their way into some of the national newspaper websites, and the Welsh weekly Golwg did a little photo feature on them.

Glad that the storm was over, I had a couple of acrylic “glass” prints to prepare, and after sending them off, I turned my attention back to researching images for my book, then lo and behold there was some glorious weather, and so I dropped the research for some stunning drives around the countryside.

Fe fues i'n paratoi lluniau ar gyfer gwneud printiau gwydr acrylig, ac yna wedi'u hanfon at yr argraffwyr, fe benderfynais bod raid gwario amser yn ymchwilio ar gyfer fy llyfr. Ond pwy fuasai'n meddwl, fe ddaeth pwcs o dywydd braf i'm hudo allan o gwmpas cefn gwlad efo'r camera!

Remembrance Sunday in Machynlleth is a very small, intimate and rather emotional affair in comparison to the pomp which accompanies the far bigger event at Aberystwyth. I'm so glad that I was encouraged to turn out, as I managed to create some pictures I'm very happy call mine. I say "create" rather than "take" or "capture" as the lighting conditions were far from perfect, and every shot required a lot of TLC in my digital darkroom.

Fe fues i draw yn gwylio gorymdaith Sul y Cofio ym Machynlleth, yn tynnu llun ar gyfer llyfr, (hynny yw os oes gen i un sy'n ddigon da i'w gynnwys). Roedd y digwyddiad mor fach ag agos atoch o'i gymharu a'r rhwysg a geir yn Aberystwyth.

I persuaded my wife to put down her work for a while and join me on a jaunt somewhere, and somehow we ended up going in the direction of Cwmystwyth, a village known for its ancient silver-lead mine workings. I wanted to show her Bonsall's Lefel Fawr, but somehow we didn't quite make it there. Following the recent storms, the rivers dancing down the slopes were too spectacular a sight to be missed, and looking back towards Devil's Bridge, the broken sunlight on Cwmystwyth was wonderfully moody. So somehow we spent our time reflecting on many things, left Lefel Fawr for another day, and headed for the Elan Valley

Fe fentrodd Marian ar daith efo mi un diwrnod, a heb unrhyw gynllun mwy na "peidio bod adref o flaen y gwaith", fe ffendion ni ein hunain yng Nghwmystwyth. Yno roedd nentydd yn rheadru i lawr wyneb y creigiau geirwon, a haul egwan gwan yn goleuo'r tirwedd. Yna ymlaen i gyfeiriad Cwm Elan, lle daethum ar draws ffermwr, merch, ci a beic cwad. Chwarae teg iddo, roedd wedi paratoi arwydd dwyieithog - oherwydd ei bod yn bwysig "to keep the language in Radnorshire".

Daeth diwrnod arall o haul yn hollti cymylau duon, gan greu patrymau deniadol ar y tirlun, a chyfle i dynnu lluniau o goed hydrefol â'u hadlewyrchiadau yn harddu Afon Rheidol.

Broken dark clouds often provide interesting patterns in the landscape as the sun peeps through the gaps, and such a day at Cwm Rheidol allowed me to take some picture-postcard views of autumnal trees reflected in the river. They may not be art, but they are nevertheless sometimes breathtakingly beautiful.

I'd arranged to take pictures of Welsh adult learners at Cardigan for a book I'm working on. I set out with what I thought was a good half hour to spare, but the traffic was awful, due to a car pulling a caravan, and ignoring the massive build-up of traffic behind. Mile after mile of being stuck at 20 to 30 miles an hour eradicated any "slack" and I eventually arrived late. Readers from outside this area will find it hard to believe, but there are no dual-carriageways between here and Cardigan, nor between here and Caernarfon, nor between here and anywhere else.

It transpired that Nic Dafis, the tutor I was photographing was later that day to receive an award for Best Tutor at Aberystwyth University. I hope he left plenty of time for the journey!

Aberteifi - cwrs Cymraeg i oedolion 4477

Roeddwn wedi trefnu ers sbel i dynnu llun Nic Dafis yn dysgu Cymraeg i oedolion yn Aberteifi. Wedi siwrne hunllefus o araf yno, fe gefais groeso ganddo ef a'r criw brwd o ddysgwyr, a chan griw arall drws nesaf, lle fues i'n siarad am fy ngwaith ac am fy magwraeth yn Sir Fôn.

Doedd dim brys i ruthro adref, ac roedd storm arall yn codi ar yr arfordir, felly fe ddewisais deithio nôl heibio Patch, Mwnt ac Aberporth, cyn ail-ymuno â'r ffordd fawr.

Snow was predicted for the area, and it did eventually arrive. I ventured up into the hills and further forward past Pumlumon, taking a few shots on the way. The best snow always appeared far ahead of me, and the nearer I got, the further away the snow seemed. By the time I was in striking distance, the light was very poor, and I gave up, returning to my nice warm home to fiddle with the pictures I'd taken. I had spotted one view which startled me and had a deeper meaning. I'll let you decide what that meaning, if such a thing as meaning exists in a snapshot, might be.

Sws eira

Wele eira ar y bryniau uchel ger Pumlumon, a llun a wnaeth i mi dynnu anadl pan sylwais arno. Fe welais arwyddocâd ynddo'n syth. Tybed a ydych chi'n gweld rhywbeth tebyg?

Rydym hyd yn hyn y mis hwn wedi cael stormydd geirwon, glaw trwm, cenllysg, eira ac yn sydyn iawn, haul cynnes braf, a hwnnw yn fy nenu allan i Ynyslas. Hwnnw a'r ffaith fy mod i wedi mwynhau gwylio'r "Gwyll" ar S4C ac yn ffansio fy hun fel Mathias yn gwibio yn fy 4x4 i lawr i Ynyslas.

So the month started with a mighty storm, brought wind, heavy rain, hail, and snow, and then suddenly bright warm sunshine, which enticed me away from my desk-work towards Ynyslas. Or perhaps I fancied myself as D C I Tom Mathias in "Y Gwyll/Hinterland" - charging out towards the sand dunes in my 4x4. Whatever the reason, I really like the subdued and subtle picture I made of one of the dunes, with the sea towering behind the fragile, shape-shifting mass.

Not content on spending all my days either photographing or seeking out images made by others, I took a busman's holiday to the Lens documentary photography day at the National Library. A very enjoyable experience, which should not be missed by those interested in photography and Wales. Or as this 9th Lens proved, Wales and the World.

LlGC / LENS
Fy nghartref ysbrydol - wedi'i foddi mewn goleuni machlud hynod

Roedd cynhadledd flynyddol Lens yn y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yn hynod ddiddorol, er yn rywfaint o "wyliau gyrrwr bws" i mi. Mwynheais bron pob munud, a chefais ysbrydoliaeth i gario 'mlaen am sbel o leiaf ar y trywydd yr wyf arno nawr, sef cyfuniad o ffotograffiaeth ac ymchwil delweddau. Wedi dweud hynny, mae'r dyhead i estyn yr hen bensil 4B yn cryfhau!

UPDATE - NEWYDD

Ymlwybrais i'r Hen Goleg i lansiad nofel newydd Manon Rhys "ad astra" ar noson y 29ain, a gadawodd hi i mi dynnu portread. Sylwais bod ei sgarff yn mynd yn berffaith gyda logo Gwasg Gomer, felly symudais y "props" o gwmpas ychydig, a tynnu'r llun isod, ac rwy'n hoff iawn o'r canlyniad!

Yna heddiw, ar ddiwrnod ola'r mis, cafwyd cwis darluniadol (fy lluniau i o Geredigion) i godi arian at Banc Bwyd Aberystwyth, ac Apêl y Ffilipinau. Cafwyd LOT o hwyl.

Yna aeth Marian a finnau am dro, bron yn y gwyll, a dod ar draws pob math o ryfeddodau "Y Gwyll"-aidd

Finally - the lovely Manon Rhys allowed me to take a portrait shot following the launch of her new novel
"ad astra", then today, following a "do" to raise funds for Aberystwyth Food Bank, and the Philippines Apeal (together with my illustrated quiz), Marian and I went for a spin just before dusk and discovered some atmospheric locations.
